Lake Alta is a well-known track on the Remarkables range, and it suits almost anyone. A piece of the high country barely 40 minutes from Queenstown. But there is more up there than just Alta, and plenty of places you can add to break up a popular route with something more interesting. So this report also covers a lookout with an epic view over Queenstown.

GETTING THERE

The route starts from the Remarkables Ski Field car park. The turn-off is between Frankton and Jacks Point, there are plenty of signs, and the point is in every navigation app. A 13 kilometre access road winds up: most of it sealed, with the last two or three kilometres gravel, not perfect but drivable in any car.

Outside the ski season there is a 15 dollar charge per car, paid at the bottom of the climb. During the ski season, June to October, entry is free and walking access to the track is open too, though it may not be the most pleasant experience with so many skiers and snowboarders about. When there is snow on the mountains you have to carry chains in the car so you can fit them if needed: as of 2026 not having them can in theory earn you a 750 dollar fine.
